If you’re someone who loves to cook, no doubt you already understand the ins-and-outs of your body’s needs.
While tonics and exercise do contribute to a healthy constitution, the most important aspect is still nutrition.
It is also to note that genetics play a part in this constitution. To achieve this state, it is important to note hereditary information, as well as the environment one is born into. A good track record of both will no doubt provide the ultimate setting for a person to grow into a Balanced constitution.
People with a Blood Stasis constitution can be of any body shape or size, but tends to have a darker pallor to their skin than most, with areas like their eyes sporting dark circles easily. Their nose and lips tend to have a purple hue, and their most obvious trait is that their face tends to accumulate spots easily.
This constitution’s symptoms stem from a poor blood flow, and the circulation is inhibited or slowed by an innate nature, or having encountered blood-related diseases prior. Chinese Medicine believes that blood which passes through the meridians and cannot release their toxins, remains stagnant in the body, meridians, and organs. Because of this, the surface elements like the skin, nails and lips become dull, and even rough, dark and scaly in some instances. Hairfall becomes a problem, and scars do not heal easily.
Here are some traits that Blood Stasis people experience:
● Dull or pigmented skin
● Complexion produces spots easily
● Dark or dull lips and nose
● Dark circles appear easily
● Hair falls out easily
● Dry and rough skin
● Women will experience more volume during periods and have more clots
If the above is left unchecked and becomes aggravated, the head, chest, sub-regions and limbs may experience painful tinglings. One may even see blood in any regurgitations or dark stools, indicating blood in the waste.
To know if you might be a Blood Stasis constitution, just look at your eyes, The presence of many fine blood lines in your white area hint at the condition, and also if you bleed easily when brushing your teeth in the morning.
Other than poor blood circulation, the person’s blood is slow to respond to the body’s needs, and can be because the body has endured surgery or suffered physical trauma. People who are depressed or live for extended periods in cold regions can also be prone to this.
People with a Damp-Heaty constitution have a more yellow tint to their complexion, accompanied with a dull pallor. They have oily skin and gives others the impression that they are not clean. Prone to breakouts, these occurrences are usually accompanied with painful swelling at affected areas.
Because of the constitution, they will also have yellow teeth and red gums, with flushed lips and a splotchy tongue. They will also experience in their mouths, dryness, bitterness, and bad breath. When they perspire, they do so a lot, with a strong smell that also leads to body odour. This can be confused with those with a Phlegmy-Damp constitution, but this constitution also exhibits strong-smelling waste. Their stools will be sticky and strong-smelling, and the same pungency will occur in their yellow urine.
Often, their bowel movements will be short and feel incomplete. Ladies will also feel uncomfortable and itchy in their personal regions.

While natural genetics play a part in this, lifestyle and personal habits play a big role in creating this constitution. Drinking and smoking tends to be predominant for these people. Staying up frequently is another cause for this. It hurts both the liver and gallbladder, and so regulating the sleep pattern is important.
With the environment giving nervousness and stress, it is easy to tackle it with the bottle than with nourishing tonic, so it’s best to understand this reaction and shift the direction to the healthier option and move away from this state...
People with a Phlegmy-Damp constitution tend to be fleshy, and even obese. They have a soft torso, especially in the abdomen, and will often have oily faces, perspire a lot and feel sticky often. Because people who are larger in size or obese tend to eat a lot, they should also have an active routine to help them use the energy and nutrition they have consumed. But with the automated lifestyles we have, the consumption stays within the system as excess. With so much processed food, rich and fragrant in our modern diet, this excess turns into something doubly unhealthy, and gives rise to this constitution.
Do you find yourself with dry skin and always thirsty? Then it’s very likely that you are of this constitution, especially if you are female. This is due to the physiological characteristics of women, where the process of menstruation, giving birth, breastfeeding etc, will consume vital blood sources and thus cause this constitution.

It’s easy to be irritable or forgetful when under this constitution. And it’s also combined with the feeling of restlessness and unease, along with fogginess.
To help, avoid spicy foods as they literally ignite the fire within the body, over-stimulating the processes and fanning the irritation.
Most with Qi Stagnant Constitutions are thin. They tend to exhibit melancholy, worry about things, and are rather frail. Sensitive and suspicious, they are also often restless and dissatisfied. They are easily frightened and because of this, carry issues with heart palpitations and nervousness. Women may even feel pain in their breasts or ribs.

For environmental influences, extended exposure in an air-conditioned environment can shift one towards this constitution.
Because Chinese Medicine believes that Yang energy comes from the kidney, it also is affected when the kidney is damaged. For prevention of further illness and longevity, it is important to nourish the kidney with tonic.
People might be piqued by the label Special, but it really means that they are the group that are particularly sensitive and can have adverse reactions to food. These are the ones who have food allergies.
Spring is the time which people with Special constitution fear the most. Pollen in the air affects them, and gives them runny noses, itchy eyes and other inflammatory or irritable conditions. This is known as Hay Fever.
But even out of that season, Special people often experience stuffy, runny noses and tearing even when they don’t have a cold. Climate and environmental changes trigger these symptoms easily, and adaptation is slow. When performing a same task, some will keep their energy levels up, but those with this state will become pale, lose the light from their yes, and become softer than ever. When there’s environmental change, they become the first to catch a cold.
The effects of having Qi Deficiency can be seen all over the body. The lack of energy affects the body’s strength, making it lack tonality, and perspiring easily. The cause is usually hereditary, because the mother may not have been nourished during pregnancy, or if one of her parents had this constitution. Athletes or sporty people who overwork their bodies during their youth, will also draw this condition out when they get older, having expended their energy earlier. Women who have extended dieting programs will also suffer malnutrition and incur this state. When the liver suffers the effects, the spleen gets affected and the conditions will start to escalate.
